Motorola Droid 3 comes with a locked bootloader

Even though Motorola promised that phones launched in “late 2011″ would ship with unlocked bootloaders, most watchers hoped that the company’s spate of summer releases would also come with bootloaders that were either unlocked from the start or could be unlocked easily. Sadly, the new Droid 3 ships with a locked bootloader, and modders aren’t happy about it.
However, they do allude to the possibility of future software updates opening up the bootloader to modders who want to tweak or customize their devices. That wasn’t good enough for some Android fans, who insisted on knowing when the relockable bootloader would be standard on Motorola devices.
The reason this is important is because a locked bootloader makes the process of rooting your Android phone significantly more difficult. Not that it’s particularly hard now, but locking the bootloader can make it significantly more difficult to install and get the full benefit of some ROMs.
The only problem with Motorola’s statement is the “where channel and operator partners will allow it” section. This implies that Motorola could very well say that handsets directly from them would be unlocked if the carriers didn’t insist that they stay locked.

Future iPhones – Faster Wireless Charging

Apple is already working hard to cut the cord between your iPhone and your computer with iOS 5, but that’s nothing compared to what we might see on when new iPhone models arrive in 2012. Details are scarce, but we believe Apple may be working on wireless or express charging for future iPhone models.
We are still covering what you might see when the iPhone 5 launches this fall, but Apple is already working on the 6th generation iPhone which is expected to launch in 2012.
The Wall Street Journal reports that, “People briefed on Apple’s plans said the company is planning a major iPhone revamp then, with one person saying the company has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone.” There are no specific details released, but given Apple’s love for making their own accessories to solve common user complaints such as the Smart Cover, we anticipate this new charging method will focus on faster charging or wireless charging.
Two of the most common iPhone accessories I am asked about are the PowerMat wireless charging solution and the Mophie Juice battery pack which doubles your iPhone battery life. Each of these accessories can add $$50 to $100 to the price of your iPhone, money which could have been spent on Apple branded accessories or iPhone apps. In order to meet the needs of power-hungry iPhone users Apple could be working on their own improvements to iPhone charging.
Wireless iPhone Charging
Now that the wireless charging standard qi has been around long enough to get buy in from players like Energizer and Verizon, Apple could build wireless charging into the iPhone 6 quite easily. This would allow Apple to offer more value with the base iPhone and make money selling Apple branded qi chargers. The move to go wireless charging syncs up well with iOS 5‘s Wi-Fi syncing and backup, AirPlay and iCloud direction.
At the same time, it would allow Apple to maintain a semi friendly relationship with iPhone accessory makers who would be able to use the qi standard to build their own wireless iPhone charging accessories for your home, travel and in the car. Yes, Apple would prefer to make all the money if it could, but Steve Jobs isn’t stupid; he knows that the wide variety of iPhone accessories is one of the iPhone’s advantages over Android phones. This is an advantage that could be expanded with the inclusion of a standard wireless charging solution in the next iPhone.
Faster iPhone Charging
Another path Apple can take is to charge yo your iPhone faster, reducing the need for extra battery cases like the Mophie Juice Packs for many users. I was blown away by how fast the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 charged, going from empty to 80% in under 30 minutes. If Lenovo can charge a laptop battery in that amount of time, I hope Apple can put together a means of fast charging the next generation iPhone.
Imagine plugging your iPhone in for as little as a half hour and walking away with a nearly full charge. This won’t solve all of our problems, but most users can find 30 minutes to charge their iPhone at some point in the day.
I am not holding my breath for a wireless charging iPhone that also charges up to 80% in under 30 minutes, but it is still a long way away. If we are lucky Apple will surprise us with built-in wireless charging on the iPhone 5 and improve from there.

Apple iPhone 5: All You Need To Know

So, here is the guide to the new iPhone
  • The next Apple iPhone will be the fifth iPhone, so will most likely be called the iPhone 5. However Apple could decide to call it the iPhone Next-Gen-Super-Speedy-Phone, if only to see if Samsung calls its next smartphone the Samsung Galaxy NGSSP.
  • It will fix the antenna problem but Apple won’t be make a big deal of it, or even mention it, as there never really was a problem, remember?
  • The next iPhone may or may not include support for 4G. However, given most networks don’t support 4G yet (especially in the UK, where we may be waiting until 2013), nobody will really care as long as it works on 2G and 3G and doesn’t drop calls (see above).
  • It may be smaller and lighter, with a smaller screen to make the next iPhone more pocket-friendly, or it may go up in size to include a larger screen. The screen might be 3D, or it might not.
  • Apple could launch two new devices and surprise us all, but this has been predicted before the launch of every iPhone following the original iPhone, so it seems like the idea of an ‘iPhone nano’ or an ‘iPhone pro’ with a keyboard isn’t as big a priority in Cupertino as we all think.
  • The next iPhone could mark Apple’s launch into the world of NFC, but given Apple usually waits until something works before joining the party, they would surely wait until the networks and banks can sort themselves out before launching? Apple doesn’t do anything with a less than satisfactory user experience. Still, if we had a choice, we’d definitely prefer to buy goods and services with a brand-new iPhone than an ancient Samsung Tocco. No doubt Apple would rename NFC into a more user-friendly name like ‘iPay’ or ‘iCash’.
  • It may use yet another sized SIM card, but only people swapping their SIM card from one phone to another will be concerned with this. Everyone else will sticks their SIM, whatever size it might be, in their phone and forget about it. Many won’t even see the SIM as it gets installed before being handed over.
  • Apple will introduce a new version of iOS, which probably won’t be supported by the 3G and 3GS in order to encourage people to upgrade. There will be some features exclusive to the iPhone 5 that won’t be possible on the iPhone 4, for the same reason.
  • It will be expensive.
  • It will be released at some point in the future.
  • It will change everything. Again.

Gameloft Gives Away 3 Android HD+ Titles This Weekend

Gameloft is looking to start the transition into weekend mode sooner rather than later. Thus, we have Gameloft’s crazy “Three4Free” giveaway, where the publisher will give away one Andriod HD+ title for free during a two-hour window each day of this weekend.
There’s no telling which games Gameloft will choose for the giveaway, but either way, a free Android HD+ title can’t hurt, right? If you agree, you’ll have to follow Gameloft’s UK Twitter account to keep up with the action. According to the official tweet, the first Android HD+ title will be announced late this afternoon.
I haven’t been able to confirm just yet whether or not this promotion is available to us here in the States, or if it’s a deal reserved for our friends across the pond. I’m working on getting that update but until then, remember that if you live on this side (West) of the Atlantic, late afternoon in the UK translates to around noonish over here, depending on what Gameloft means by the word “late.” In any case, we’ll have our eyes peeled for the start of our first two-hour window and you should too

Japanese Company Shows 32-Inch Multi-Touch Display Powered By Android

One of Android‘s advantages is its versatility, as a Japanese company called SKR Technology [JP] now demonstrates: SKR has developed a 32-inch digital signage display that runs on Android 2.3 and that supports multi-touch.

The display, which is a prototype but ready to be commercialized in September, features a USB and an HDMI port. It produces pictures in full HD resolution.

SKR plans to develop 23- and 46-inch versions too and aims at selling around 100 of their displays each year.

This video, shot by our friends over at Diginfonews, provides more insight:

This Case Lets You Attach An SLR Lens To Your iPhone

Hello friends! Welcome to this week’s edition of Because You Can!
Why would you want to take a super huge telescoping SLR lens and attach it to your iPhone? Because You Can!™©®
Well, you can now that this crazy iPhone SLR Lens mounting kit exists.

Sure, the tiny sensor in your iPhone can’t really take advantage of all of the benefits of a high quality lens — and sure, the size difference between a kit with an iPhone and a kit with a proper body is relatively small once you’ve brought any decent-sized lens into the picture.. but hey, lets see your SLR upload your awesome Desert Safari pictures to Dropbox with nothing but an EDGE connection and a prayer.
The lens mount comes in two flavors: one for Canon EOS lenses, and one for Nikon tubes. Both can be found for the sticker-shock-tastic price of $190 $249 over at Photojojo.

Full Review and Specification for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

It’s a question we have asked before – why has Sony Ericsson taken such a long time to release a Playstation phone? With Sony as one of the partners, you’d think it would be an obvious move. Whatever the reasons behind it, we were really excited when we heard about the Xperia Play and were hoping it wouldn’t let us down.

First impressions
The SonyXperia Play is certainly a chunky device. It’s thick and heavy – but there is a good reason for this. Slide the touch-screen away from you and you’ll find a big gaming pad, which has the four familiar PlayStation keys, touch controls and a D-pad. This gaming pad comes in metallic silver and is a good contrast for the shiny piano black front and back of the device. The body is subtly curved on the back and edge, which gives it an ergonomic feel – it was, however, far more comfortable to hold in gaming mode than when holding it like a normal mobile handset.
The display is a decent four inches and although it is very tactile we’ve seen far more vibrant screens. It is possible to dim it from one of the home screens, although we’re not sure why you’d want to use it – on the lower setting it’s hard to make out images and text. Below the display are four hard buttons – menu, back, home and search. If you hold the device vertically, you’ll find a left and right key on the right hand edge – like the PSP – which sit either side of the two volume buttons.
On the other side of the device there sits a microUSB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. This is a good position for the jack, as when you’re playing games, the headphones will have direct access to your ears, rather than being bent around the phone’s corners – this should avoid getting tangled up and damaging your headphones. This won’t be the case when listening to music, but as this is supposed to be a gaming device, this is a really sensible decision.
Android GingerbreadWe’ll say more about the gaming features in a minute, but first we’d like to point out that the Xperia play is running Google’s latest Android OS – 2.3, or Gingerbread, which speeds up the user experience, improved keyboard, better app management (in terms of memory and power usage), Near Fields Communication (NFC) and VoIP calling. The Xperia Play does a good job on all these fronts, apart from NFC – while the OS provides the facility, it is up to the maker of each handset to enable it, and the Xperia Play is by no means alone in ignoring it at this stage. The OS is skinned by Sony Ericsson’s own offering, but if you’re familiar with Android it won’t make too much difference to your user experience.
GamingSo, on to the gaming facilities. Once the gaming pad has been slid out, the screen automatically changes to landscape view and the onboard Xperia Play App quickly fires up. The pad slides out smoothly, and needs a bit of force to do so (a good thing in our opinion) – but it is really easy to just nudge out the pad slightly, which results in the Play App firing up – we found this happened quite a lot if we were taking the handset out of our pocket to make a call – you’ll have to press the back or home key to go back to the normal phone screen.

Once in the Play app, you’ll see two tabs at the bottom of the display. One takes you to your library of optimised games – at the moment there are about 60 to choose from, along with the six preloaded games. The other tab takes you to the games that you can download. This is where it gets a bit confusing – once you’ve chosen a game, you’ll be whisked to the developer website to pay by PayPal, debt or credit card. In the top right hand corner of the display you’ll see an Android icon – this will open a list of games that have been optimised for the handset. So, there are two ways to choose and buy games – it just makes it more complicated than it needs to be. Also, whichever way you find your list of games, they’re not listed in any particular order – so you can’t choose by price or by genre. Game prices come in at an average of around £5-7, which is pricey compared with most iPhone games. Mind you we did find a few bargains – £3 for Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles HD for example. Having said that, UNO also cost £3 – we weren’t persuaded to buy it! By the way, if you choose games that aren’t Xperia Play optimised (that is they don’t need a gamepad), they won’t be stored in this library and you’ll have to access them from the main menu.
Playing games
We found the games intuitive and fun to play. As footie fans we were happy to see FIFA 10 already on board – although we did find it odd that Arsenal’s Emmanuel Eboue just ran round aimlessly in a circle. The controls are well positioned, although we’d liked to have seen the D-Pad slightly more raised to avoid thumb cramp after a long games session. Beneath the PlayStation and D-pad buttons are two round touch-pads, which are only used in some games and can prove a nuisance in others. If the phone rings while you’re playing, the game will automatically pause – and if you need to make a call or access another feature in the middle of a game, you can just push the home key, do what you have to do, and then come back to the game by reopening the Play app.
What was a big disappointment was the graphics. Game play is fast and speedy, thanks to the Qualcomm optimised Snapdragon processor and 1GHZ CPU, along with an Adreno GPU graphics processor, and yet some games looked rather blocky at times – especially frustrating because the opening sequences were so impressive. And because Sony Ericsson can do some great things with a screen – see our Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc review.

You may have heard rumours that it is possible to download original PlayStation games to the Xperia Play – and you can! However, there is a separate platform for doing this. It’s called PlayStation Pocket and in our review sample there were only five to download – each costing £3.99 – but we have been promised that this will increase in the future. The Xperia Play does have Crash Bandicoot preloaded – but we found it rather dated, although if you’ve always loved the game, we’re sure you’ll immerse yourself in the nostalgia and not worry about it. Another strange thing is that the PlayStation Pocket games do not sit in the Play App, even though they utilise the games pad.
Other featuresSo that’s gaming, what about the rest of the phone? Well it s a decent smartphone – with GPS, Wi-Fi and a five-megapixel snapper – it’s not as good as the Arc’s camera but sits well enough among most other Android-powered cameras. The web browsing experience was speedy and benefits from Gingerbread’s one-touch copy-and-paste facility. You can zoom in and out by double tapping the screen or by pinching and zooming.
The verdictIt has to be said that the Xperia Play offers nothing special in terms of smartphone features (and the Xperia Arc does many of them better) so ultimately it will be judged on its gaming offering. While there’s no doubt that it’s a good way to while away some spare time, if you have a PSP or Nintendo DS Lite, it’s not going to serve as a replacement. And if you’re a casual gamer, it doesn’t offer a smooth, slick way to store or download games, when compared with the iPhone 4, for instance. It’s certainly not a bad phone, but if we were buying a Sony Ericsson handset, we would opt for the Xperia Arc, and use the money we saved to buy a PSP for gaming
